The theft of GPS equipment from agricultural machinery has become an organized and targeted form of crime. Many believe that a GPS tracker is the solution – but reality is more complex. We have had extensive and open discussions with the police on this topic. The message is clear: It is far more difficult to recover stolen GPS equipment than most people think.
In theory, a tracker can show a location. In practice, it is not always that simple. Police describe situations where an active tracker signal has been followed onto a motorway – without being able to identify the exact vehicle. You may see movement on a map, but not necessarily the specific car. GPS equipment from, for example, a tractor is surprisingly compact. It can be hidden under the seat of a small car without attracting attention. From the outside, there is nothing to indicate what the vehicle contains. This makes recovery efforts difficult and highly uncertain.
According to the police, a large portion of stolen GPS equipment is quickly transported across borders for resale. Once the equipment leaves the country, the ability to act is significantly reduced. Additionally, trackers are sometimes jammed – electronically disrupted – until they can be located and removed from the equipment. Once the signal disappears, the trail goes cold. Yes, GPS equipment is sometimes recovered using trackers. But it is far from a reliable or straightforward process.
In our dialogue with the police, one point is consistent: They strongly recommend investing in better physical security rather than relying on recovery afterwards. Thieves are professional. But they are also cautious. They do not want attention. They do not want noise. They do not want to spend unnecessary time. They go for what is quick and easy.
